Investing in Rural Schools, Investing in Children’s Futures

In Romania, there are still children who study in old school buildings, with nearly empty libraries and few safe spaces to read, play or spend time together. In some rural communities, even basic utilities such as running water cannot be taken for granted.

Yet school is much more than a building. It is where children discover the world, make friends, build confidence and begin imagining their future. When we invest in a school, we invest in the opportunities of an entire generation.

With the support of Cargill Romania, Heart of a Child Foundation implemented a project to improve learning and recreational conditions for children in Mălușteni, Lupești and Țuțcani, three rural communities in Vaslui County.

New spaces to read, learn and dream

The three schools received new library furniture and comfortable reading areas, creating more welcoming spaces for children.

Cargill Romania employees also donated 335 books, games and educational materials, bringing the new reading corners to life. We complemented these resources with six interactive workshops, where children read, talked about friendship and emotions, drew and learned together.

The goal was simple: to make books and learning something children could enjoy and explore.

Because childhood also needs play

Children learn through movement, friendship and play, too.

That is why the project also created new playgrounds in Mălușteni, Lupești and Țuțcani. Today, these spaces give children a safe place to play together, be active and develop their social skills.

And in Lupești, the project addressed an even more fundamental need.

The school had no running water.

Connecting it to the water network brought something most of us consider ordinary, but which makes an enormous difference to the health, safety and dignity of the children and teachers who spend their days there.

What does change look like?

Perhaps the best answer comes from the children themselves:

“We really enjoy the new playground and everything we have received at school. We love playing together, reading the new books and taking part in activities. Our school is now more beautiful and cheerful.”
— Student, Mălușteni School

The project brought better reading spaces, hundreds of books and educational materials, interactive workshops, new playgrounds and improved school conditions.

But its impact goes beyond what we can count: children who are excited to pick up a book, play safely with their friends and feel that their school is a place where they matter.

At Heart of a Child Foundation, we believe that where a child is born should not determine their future. Every investment in a rural school creates more opportunities for children to learn, grow and believe in what they can become.

Thank you to Cargill Romania, its employee volunteers, the teachers, local authorities and everyone who helped make this change possible. Together, we are giving children better places to learn — and better opportunities for the future.
